What to expect during a Reiki session?
During a Reiki session, the individual should expect to feel a releasing of stress from the body and deep sense of relaxation. The client, lying on a table or sitting in a chair, is fully clothed during the treatment. The practitioner may perform the treatment using a “hands on” or “hands off” approach. Either method is effective.
How is a Reiki Treatment given?
Reiki is an ancient technique that increases the life force energy in the body. Reiki practitioners acknowledges this life force energy, or Ki, that is in and around the body. The practitioner channels this energy into their body, and channels the energy through their hands into that of the person receiving the treatment; any stuck or stagnant energy is released, resulting in increased levels of relaxation and improved energy.
Typically, the client is lying on a massage table; Reiki can also be administered while the client is sitting in a chair or recliner. In either method, the client is fully clothed. This transferring or moving of energy, increases the clients Ki or life force energy. The client’s muscles relax and blood flow increase in the areas being treated and this is what supports the healing process. Whether it be physical, mental, emotional or spiritual.
What Does the Practitioner Focus On?
Reiki practitioners often focus their session on the seven main chakras, in the body. Performing a “body scan” of the chakras, allows the practitioner to detect any blocked or stagnant energy in the body which may cause one to feel sickness, pain and other types of discomfort. The practitioner is aware that they are the channel for the healing energy to flow, and not the source of the healing.
Healing with Reiki energy is an intuitive process. Individuals giving a treatment will use various hand positions on or above the client’s body. There is a formal set of hand positions used, however, during a session the practitioner may pick one spot on a person’s body to work on based on what they are sensing to be discomfort or stuck energy. No treatment is the same but a individualized experience.
The beauty of Reiki is the energy will go where it is most needed. A session may go for 5 minutes or one hour; depends on the level of healing the client is seeking. Many clients will choose to have three one hour sessions over a period of one month. It is really a discussion between the practitioner and the client; everyone’s needs will be different.
Reiki healing, brings change, and the benefits are more noticeable with each session. In crisis or times of increased stress, patients regularly indicate relief inside a couple of minutes. Often, they will fall asleep and/or experience a significant shift in their physical, mental and emotional well-being.
How does Reiki feel?
Individuals receiving a treatment may experience being cold, warm or feel no change in temperature; it varies for each person. Many feel very relaxed and as mentioned, will fall asleep on the table. Due to the release of stress from the body, many will experience their muscles jerk. In addition, they may notice a change in breathing patterns as the clients’ and practitioners breathing may begin to sync.
There is no pain associated with a Reiki treatment. The clients job is to show up with the intention to relax; the energy will flow where it is needed. Be sure to let your practitioner know if you are experiencing any physical, emotional or mental discomfort, this will allow him or her to focus intent for the greatest healing. But no worries, the energy will intuitively go where it is most needed.
